Queen Mother Felicia Smith spent a huge part of her life as a schoolteacher, mine to be exact. I was enrolled in several of her classes over my adolescent years. She was more like a village mother, though. She was more like an aunt. A divine feminine figure before I knew what one was. She always had a point of good advice, her own unique way of slipping wisdom into the knowledge of her lessons. She also had her ways of showing the difference between knowledge and wisdom. There were some students that could get away with less than others when it came to her. I was one of those students. I would later learn that she singled me out because she saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself at the time. For that, I am forever grateful.
Queen Mother Felicia Smith made sure the black students knew about black writers and scholars. She made sure we were familiar with Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes…Richard Wright and August Wilson. There were so many others. She was one who spent a lot of time molding young minds in preliminary stages of adulthood.
